“War and Peace” brings the acclaimed Wits Trio, Malcolm Nay (piano), Zanta Hofmeyr (violin) and Susan Mouton (cello), to the Endler for a powerful evening of reflection in music.
The programme pairs Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97 “Archduke”, a work long associated with ideals of liberty and hope (famously heard at the fall of the Berlin Wall), with Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67, a searing response to the horrors and genocide of World War II. Together, these two trios explore the extremes of human experience – from luminous tenderness to raw anguish – yet ultimately affirming the enduring strength of the human spirit.
Since their formation in 2012, the Wits Trio has become a mainstay of South African chamber music, with acclaimed appearances at the National Arts Festival and across the country. This emotionally charged programme promises an intense and deeply moving listening experience.
