Zabalaza is the Baxter Theatre Centre’s dynamic development programme, dedicated to discovering and nurturing bold new theatre voices from across the Western Cape. Each year, one standout production selected to perform at the Suidoosterfees in partnership with NATi. This year’s featured production, Kinnes van Somers, is a gripping reimagining of a classic Afrikaans cautionary folk tale. Winner of Best Production, Best Directors and Best Ensemble at the 16th Annual Zabalaza Festival, the piece utilises folk drama to explore how inherited stories shape identity. Set within a close-knit community, childhood warnings and whispered fears take on new life as folklore and reality blur, offering a haunting reflection on what we inherit and what we become.
