An intimate and varied musical journey across our farm.

Music is close to our hearts at Spier, and we have always invested in the careers of South African artists. In response to the reception for The Routes of Sound over the past two years, we are extending this bite-sized music festival from one weekend to a series of three winter weekends in 2026, featuring a total of over 40 local musicians.

Presented by Brett Bailey and Third World Bunfight, The Routes of Sound spotlights a range of outstanding musicians: some well-known, and others ‘under the radar’, in cosy, intimate settings. It takes audiences on a journey of exploration as they sample three diverse musical acts each paired with one of Spier’s award-winning Creative Block wines, in some of Spier’s most atmospheric spaces. The evening culminates in a rousing concert.

Each weekend has a completely different line-up. On the first weekend attendees may spend time with Johannesburg-based folk singers Muneyi and Chosi; Afrikaans songstress Magé Troskie; blues-rock musician Cheyenne Hill; Mickey Struwick and Ntu2ko. The second weekend features amongst others: indigenous instrumentalist and singer Sky Dlala; Afrikaans poet-musician RFKI; and South African-Peruvian singer Mano. The third weekend features Lungiswa Plaatjies; folk duo Dead Dungarees; balladeer Maya Grey, and others. The full line-up is available on the Speir website.

The concept of The Routes of Sound plays on the words routes and roots: the paths to musical discovery you'll follow, and the joy of enjoying music in its most elemental form: unplugged and up-close. For lovers of lyrics, it's an compelling, enriching evening of wandering, and a chance to be transported by the poetic musings of our local artists.

We suggest booking an early meal at Spier Hotel’s Veld Restaurant to settle in beforehand. Dress warmly and bring comfortable walking shoes for strolling between venues.
