Sidepocket is a one-man comedy show starring acclaimed South African comedian Roni Modimola as Sidepocket, the popular character he first brought to television audiences on The Pure Monate Show.

Performed entirely in character, the show combines stand-up comedy with elements of sketch, social commentary, dry humour, improvisation, satire and slapstick. Sidepocket is a mysterious, Sepedi-speaking man who roams the streets freely offering his unsolicited opinions and advice on everything around him. His background and personal history remain unknown, while his eccentric appearance and unconventional worldview place him somewhere between madness and genius.

Over the course of the show, Sidepocket turns his attention to an unpredictable range of subjects, including gender and race relations, politics, fashion, religion, sport, philosophy and even astronomy. His observations, stories and opinions provide the foundation for a deliberately deconstructed performance in which audience participation and improvisation play an important role.

Building on the character's popularity on television and in live performances, Sidepocket brings Roni Modimola's alter ego centre stage in a distinctive vernacular comedy production designed to entertain, provoke thought and engage audiences through an unmistakably South African comic voice.
