“MASTER HAROLD” … AND THE BOYS by Athol Fugard is a gripping one act play set in a Port Elizabeth tearoom in the 1950s, in deep apartheid South Africa. On a rainy afternoon, seventeen-year-old Hally spends time with Sam and Willie, two men who have worked for his family for many years. Their easy banter, shared memories and genuine affection reveal a relationship that seems to transcend the divisions of the society around them. But as the day unfolds, tensions rise and long-buried truths emerge, forcing each character to confront the realities of a country built on inequality.
By turns humorous, moving and deeply thought-provoking, the story explores friendship, loyalty, dignity and the impact of prejudice. Fugard's masterful writing combines human drama with an examination of South Africa's past, creating a theatrical experience that remains as relevant today as when it first premiered in 1982. Directed by Menzi Mbuli, featuring Christopher Van Selm, Wandile Skhwatha and Thabiso Mkhize.
