AND THE GIRLS IN THEIR SUNDAY DRESSES by Zakes Mda is set during a devastating economic crisis in Lesotho, where soaring prices and widespread shortages force people to queue for days to buy basic necessities. In one such queue, two women from vastly different social backgrounds meet and form an unlikely bond. The Lady, a retiring prostitute, clings to the glamour and appearance that have long defined her identity and survival. The Woman, a domestic worker, brings a grounded perspective shaped by years of hardship and resilience.
As they share a single chair and pass the time together, they reveal stories of love, loss, abandonment, and endurance. Through humour, wit, and poignant conversation, the play explores class inequality, gender, dignity, and survival. Directed by Princess Mhlongo and performed by Gontse Ntshegang and Tshireletso Nkoane.
