SOWETO THEATRE COMMEMORATES 50 YEARS SINCE 1976 SOWETO UPRISING
The Soweto Theatre Youth Day Commemoration is a powerful cultural gathering that honours the legacy of the youth of 1976 and their enduring contribution to South Africa’s democratic journey. Hosted at Soweto Theatre, the event brings together a vibrant programme of performance, reflection, and celebration through the arts.
At the heart of the commemoration is a special headline performance featuring the legendary and new cast of Sarafina!, the iconic musical that continues to echo the struggles, courage, and voice of young people during the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Their collaboration serves as a bridge between generations, connecting past resistance with present-day expression.
The programme further showcases dynamic performances by Lits’omong Performing Arts Programme, Maison De’La Dance, Sibikwa Arts Centre, Letsibogo Girls Secondary School, and the Morris Isaacson Centre for Music. Together, these groups bring a rich tapestry of dance, music, and storytelling that reflects the energy, creativity, and resilience of today’s youth.
Beyond the stage, audiences can engage with a lively youth market featuring food, crafts, and local creative enterprises, turning the theatre precinct into a full day cultural experience.
The Soweto Theatre Youth Day Commemoration is both remembrance and renewal. A celebration of history, identity, and the transformative power of youth through the arts.
