Directed by Janni Younge and choreographed by Jay Pather, The Firebird reimagines Stravinsky's 1910 ballet through a distinctly South African lens. The production centres on the Seeker, whose journey becomes a metaphor for awakening and transformation. Younge's signature large-scale puppetry—featuring mythical creatures that tower over the performers—combines with Pather's contemporary choreography to create a visual language that's both ancient and utterly modern. This is theatre on an epic scale: Stravinsky's electrifying orchestral score, driving a high-energy spectacular that builds from intimate struggle to triumphant release.
