Yangthola! is a one-hander rooted in the lived reality of a street dweller surviving through multiple income streams. The work examines the emotional, economic, and social impact of the capitalist system on hardworking Black South Africans, revealing how survival is negotiated daily within an unforgiving urban environment.
Set in the inner city, a single performer repurposes discarded materials to construct characters, worlds, and moments of memory. The production makes use of puppetry, heightened performance, comedy, and Poor Theatre techniques to transform recycled objects into storytelling tools. These elements foreground resourcefulness as both a survival strategy and an artistic language.
Yangthola! has received a Bronze Standard Bank Ovation Award and the Naledi Award for Best Fringe Performance (2025). The production offers a focused and socially urgent theatrical experience that speaks to questions of homelessness, substance abuse, and visibility.
