The Rise and Fall of the African Gospel: Nongqawuse.
Created, Written, and Directed by: Mbongeni Moroke
This musical play brings to life the historical events of 1856/7 that shaped South Africa's social dimensions. It's a story of spirituality, religion, tradition, culture, and the demise of a way of life of African people. The play features two well-known spiritual and religious figures. Nongqawuse, a young maiden seer/prophetess whom history points to as the person behind the mass cattle killing that occurred in 1856/7 in the Xhosa landscape. Tiyo Soga, the first black priest to be ordained into the ministry of the Presbyterian Church.
