The UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble, comprising of about forty-five under- and post-graduate students perform their second concert of 2024, conducted by Brandon Phillips, Head of Woodwind and Ensembles at UCT. The programme opens with Bernstein’s jovial signature piece, the Overture to Candide followed by English composer Edward Gregson’s Tuba Concerto with UCT postgraduate student Miché van der Rheede as soloist. The concert closes with American composer Alfred Reed’s Armenian Dances consisting of a number of Armenian folk songs from the collection of one of the pioneers of Armenian ethnomusicology, Komitas Vardapet.
